The Oscars: 2012's awards season finale!

First of all, who invited Caroline in the City?? Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was there, too. I mean, for serious, wtf? And Diddy? Just go home. You’re ridiculous.

Ok, now onto the fun stuff. I was tempted to include the Vanity Fair Oscar Party red carpet in this mess of hot and not, but this is just for the big show. So sorry, TV stars and musicians! Make room for real movie stars:

2012 Academy Awards Best Dressed
Oscar Gowns 10-2

10. Ellie Kemper in Armani Prive (Great hair, great color, great fit. For being a non-nominee, she looked exactly perfect.)
9. Natalie Portman in Vintage Dior Haute Couture 1954 Collection (I love me some polka dots! Some people are saying this is too similar to what she wore last year, but I really don’t think so. I love the silhouette and color on her. She wasn’t too overdone and knew how to do it right.)
8. Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture (I want to LOVE love her gown. Truly I do. I’m trying to love the turtleneck bow SO HARD and really, it’s growing on me. The only flaw I can find is that her makeup just didn’t go.)
7. Rooney Mara in Givenchy (Those bangs! Other than her iron curtain of bangs, she looks faboosh. Cheers for rocking the small bubbies! She did Givenchy proud – plus she didn’t wear black! YAY!)
6. Judy Greer in Monique Lhuillier (In all honesty, I don’t think I’ve seen a single nominated film aside from The Help so I didn’t know why JG was there until I saw a clip of The Descendants. Being a non-nominee and non-presenter, Judy looked 100% perfect. Sure this dress may come off as plain and boring, but there’s something about it that was entirely perfect and absolutely beautiful.)
5.  Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen (FINALLY she did something right. And really, you can’t go wrong in McQueen, imho. The hair was en pointe, too. Way to end awards season on a high note, Jess!)
4. Angelina Jolie in Versace (Yes, that was A LOT of leg but it was a goooood leg. She rocked that dress like she was working for a sandwich. And did you see the back? She knows that she’s so amazeballs that she can get away with joorey on the back.)
3. Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab (The supermodel-turned-actress was fresh to death in a gown from this season’s most killer couture show. Bernice Bejo totes missed out on this gem.)
2. Giuliana Rancic in Tony Ward (Relegated to some place off the carpet, G has never looked better. Her hair was severe, but it was a nice change from her yards and yards of magic hair. She managed to turn this delicate dress out and show up some of young Hollywood’s hottest chicks.)

Oscars Best Dressed: Michelle Williams

1. Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton (MUAH! 150% perfect. Louis Vuitton is obvi known for luggage and handbags and has been universally panned for their shoes and gowns. So when I heard MW’s dress was by LV, I was a little shocked. It had more of a Dior feel. Either way, Michelle had one AH-maaaazing red carpet moment. Losing to Meryl Streep has never looked so good.)
Honorable Mentions: Best Dressed
  • Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji (The same dress and silhouette we’ve seen her in for ever awards show, but this is by far the best fit, cut, and color.)
  • Viola Davis in Vera Wang (Good color on her but her bubbage is confusing. I don’t know else to put it. I love the dress, but the fit on her isn’t ideal.)
  • Rose Byrne in Vivienne Westwood (Simple and understated. Love.)
  • Melanie Griffith in Yves Saint-Laurent (I know, I know. She’s getting the crazy face and her saggy arm tattoo is grody but she looks good!)
  • Cameron Diaz in Gucci (Put together and classy. Snaps to you, Cami.)
  • Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mishka (One of my new red carpet favs to watch.)
2012 Academy Awards Worst Dressed
2012 Academy Awards Worst Dressed 10-2

10. Sacha Baron Cohen (Ugh. His stunt queen moves are getting tired. Nothing much else to say except that I’m bored and no one should wear their movie costume on a red carpet.)
9. Glenn Close in Zac Posen (I know she’s a woman of a certain age, but she should know by now how not to look like the mother-of-the-bride.)
8. Bernice Bejo in Elie Saab (I know sleeves are in, but this would have been SO much better on Meryl Streep)
7.  Lara Spencer (I can’t find the designer.) (Not only is she super annoying and double boobing with just one boob (confounding, I know), but she’s also a very unappealing shade of orange. I feel bad for the designer who loaned her the gown because it’s going to come back all Kardashianed with self tanner.)
6. Melissa Leo in Reem Acra (Dropping the f-bomb on live TV is surely the fastest way to my heart, but not even that can make me forgive her for this mess.)
5. Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad (Hey, stunt queen: Falcon Crest isn’t being remade, right?)
4. Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel (WEAR A COLOR!!!! I’m so sick of this nonsense. SCORSESE!)
3. Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture (This dress ages her entirely too much. Another dress on a young girl that Meryl would have rocked so much better.)
2. Anna Faris in Diane von Furstenberg (Nothing about her works. Not her hair, dress, personality, or acting ability. She’s just a walking blow-up doll in a too-tight black sequin dress. Next!)
2012 Academy Awards Worst Dressed: Meryl Streep

1. Meryl Streep in Lanvin (Ughhhhh at the G Globes, it was a gray trash bag so I guess gold is an upgrade? In the grand scheme of things, talent is what matters so congrats to Mer on her big win but it kills me that she wore this dress.)

Honorable Mentions: Worst Dressed
  • Louise Roe in Black Halo (This looks like it was stolen from the set of Big Business. A film favorite, but not for its fashions.)
  • Penelope Ann Miller in Badgley Mischka (Too tight and a tired silhouette)
  • Missi Pyle in Valentino Delfino (Double boobing like woah.)
  • Stacey Kiebler Elf in Marchesa (Nothing much to say but I’m craving cinnamon rolls now. I don’t know why people are so jazzy about this dress. To me, it’s just meh.)

Honestly, I'm glad awards season is over. I'm exhausted. I love the gowns and compiling my lists, but really, I'm SO ready to get back to advice and stuff.

Anyhoozelbeez, once again, a million thanks to for the pics! Thanks for reading and come back for more therapy sessions ;)

Oscars live blog reminder!

Hey there Button Bears!
Just a reminder -- I'll be live blogging the Academy Awards red carpet THIS SUNDAY! Enter your email address below for a reminder to visit your favorite therapist so you don't miss a second of snarky, sassy, and (possibly) informative comments ;) Once again, this will be a tongue-in-cheek commentary and it's all in fun. Our Golden Globes coverage ended up being a fun little party so sign up below for a reminder! Depending on the turnout, I may keep blogging throughout the whole show. Hope to see you there!

How to best dress your nest

Hey there, Buttons!
So far this bliggity blog has been all about making yourself look your best, but it would be remiss not to talk about creating a fabulous living space! I've never been able to pin down an exact decorating style. Honestly, my (chic, if I may say so) apartment is a blend of contemporary, midcentury modern, traditional, and, let's be honest, Hello Kitty. I guess I'm best described as "eclectic." Just don't show me anything that's uber country or kitschy. I'll punch you in the junk.

I don't fancy myself any sort of a professional decorator. I find things that I like and find a way to make them work -- and I love doing it. I think it's partly because I loved staying home "sick" ;) when I was in grade school and would watch interior design shows with my mom. My 600sqft studio has been carefully tweaked to create a warm, cozy place to sleep and a vibrant, fun area to work and watch TV. And I have to tell you that 75% (or more) of my furniture has come from my friend Haley. Her great taste in furniture -- and everything, really -- has allowed me to create what I think is a fabulous space ;)

Here are three of my "dream rooms" I hope to replicate in some way when I move to a space that has, well, rooms:

Happy decorating, Buttons! And don't forget I'll be liveblogging the Academy Awards Red Carpet this Sunday!!

The skinny on skin

Hello my beautiful little buttons!
So much great stuff has been going on so I've been crazy busy. Don't feel like I've forgotten about you, though!

Today's topic is skin. With Adele being all the buzz, her gorgeous face has been everywhere. And I must say that I am beyond envious of her perfect porcelain complexion. I've battled icky acne and oily skin for as long as I can remember so seeing Adele at 23 with a flawless face would make me so mad if I didn't love her as much as I do. I mean, look at her!
I mean, seriously.

So, since healthy skin is as important as what you wear on top of it, here's my recipe for healthy, radiant skin that will rival Adele's.

First: STOP SMOKING! Not only will it force me to sit on the other side of the room from you, but ciggy smoke ages you and destroys your skin faster than Adele's songs can make you all weepy. Plus, cigarettes yellow your teeth, give you wrinkles, make your hair and teeth stink, oh yeah AND KILL YOU. So please, do yourself and your beautiful lungs a huge favor and kick the habit.

Second: No tanning. I'm completely serious about this one. Look at all of Hollywood's famous leading ladies who are still being cast in movies: Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Diane Lane, and Michelle Pfeiffer. What do they all have in common? Milky white skin! Sure they may have had some work done but they aren't all leather faced and gross. They're aging gracefully partly because they've stayed away from the sun and the tanning bed. Take your skin advice from ladies like Adele and Dita von Teese, not from Snookie and Pauly D. Want more evidence? According to Dr. Oz, "It's time we rethink our position on the standards of beauty. Tan really is not beautiful; it is a walking advertisement for skin cancer." Preach, doctor!

Third: Find a skincare regimen that 1) works for you, 2) is easy to follow (i.e. not so complicated you skip steps), and 3) is affordable. I have hella oily skin so I use the Body Shop's Tea Tree line in conjunction with their Vitamin C serum and moisturizer. This may not work for someone with dry skin, so don't be afraid to go to the Body Shop, Nordstrom, Sephora, or Kiehl's and have a heart to heart with a skincare expert. If they don't give you samples, then they're duds who don't understand the skin care process. By giving you a sample, you can use the products for a few days and really decide if you love them or not.

Fourth: Find a great dermatologist. If you aren't sure where to start, ask your friends, coworkers, or your other doctors. Finding a dermie who will sit with you for 20-30 minutes about your skin is paramount in maintaining your body's largest organ. Plus, they can check you for skin cancer, remove unsightly (and potentially dangerous) moles, and give you advice on skincare products and prescriptions.

Fifth: MOISTURIZE! We're in the doldrums of winter. Even worse, I'm in Colorado which is basically a desert with mountains. To combat skin scales, work from the inside out. Truth: Having mono saved my skin. Why? All I could do was sleep and drink water. 6 months later when I had recovered, my skin looked the best it ever looked. Here's a good rule of thumb: Take your weight and divide it in half; that number is how many ounces of water you should be drinking every day. Drinking anything else (alcohol, coffee, soda) works against you, so if you must partake, make up for it with an extra glass of H20.

After getting your insides moisturized, then work on the outside. Use SPF EVERY DAY! Clouds magnify the sun so you can do damage even on icky winter days. Also, start with moisturizers the second you step out of the shower. I love LOVE Haley's Heart's Skin Kiss and the Body Shop's Mango Body Butter throughout the day on my hands and elbows. Some people find their Body Butters too heavy and greasy, so do some of your own research and report back ;)

Here's my skin care collection. It seems ridic, but this stuff works (for me at least!). Get to the mall and make an appointment with your dermie to find a routine that's right for you.
My daily skin routine!

This is by no means a complete list of ways to get healthy, beautiful skin but it's a start! Just remember that what works for your sister may not work at all for you. Plus, what worked for you 10 years ago probably won't keep working for you in the future. As Dame Anita Roddic, the late founder of the Body Shop, said, it's not about turning back the clock; it's acknowledgment of the fact that as we age our skin has different needs."

So with that advice, go forth and let your skin shine from the inside out!

The Grammys: music's big fug night

By default, even before the Grammys began, I bestow my award for best everything award to the Foo Fighters. And my future husband award goes Dave Grohl. He looked adorbs and straight out of Almost Famous. Definitely Golden God material. The rest of the boys look fabulous, too. L.O.V.E. But why were they relegated to a tent in the parking lot? Lamesauces. Don’t get me started on them letting Maroon 5 in the building. I just can’t.

Anyhoozelbeez, enough of my Foo Fighters love fest. The red carpet was full of the sads and stunt queens. Here are my honorable mentions, best, and worst of the evening!

Grammys update!

Hey mah boos!
I've decided to cancel the Grammys red carpet live blog partly because I forgot to promote it like I did with the G Globes and partly because I won't know who half the tricks are on the red (or do they do purple or something?) carpet. But fret not: I'll be giving you my best and worst dressed messes of the night on Sunday/Monday!

In the mean time, I'll be re-watching the Foo Fighters documentary for no joke the 5th time and going to a work thing.

And since we're on the topic of music, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the major sads I have with the passing of Whitney Houston. Whitney was my fav in middle school and the Bodyguard soundtrack was one of the first albums I remember begging my parents to buy. So rest in peace, Ms. Houston. I think we all had our fingers crossed for a comeback but it just wasn't in the cards. So today, blast your favorite Whitney tunes and dance like no one is watching!

Spring break without going broke

Ok, so I have to be honest here: In college, I never took a spring break "woohoo" trip. The one time I did plan a mini vacay, my plans were thwarted by a blizzard so huge that it closed the airport for a few days. However, I have had my fair share of travel and vacation experience. 28 years and 22 countries later, while I'm still no travel expert, I know a fair amount about pre-vacay shopping and packing.

Here are some outfit ideas for you little lovelies! I'm severely lacking in funds so I'm going to have to live vicariously through you, my fellow world travelers!
Spring Break 2012

Just a note (or two): SUNSCREEN! SPF will save your life. A tan may look good now, but sun damage and skin cancer are two things no one wants to deal with. Oh, and flip flops. I admit that I have no less than 2 dozen pair of J.Crew and Havianas flip flops but step it up for this vacation. Just don't get too gladiator-ish. I always get the lolz when I see someone with sandals that lace and buckle up to their knees. Back to the action...
New York spring break vacation

Who doesn't love NYC? There's always something to do, somewhere to go, and stuff to buy. That being said, you need to be comfortable -- but  be careful not to look like a tourist. And I know what you're thinking about the black dress but I think every girl deserves a Carrie Bradshaw moment in the Big Apple!

Ski vacation

I just realized I left off something important here: sunscreen. Another thing that makes me lol is a ski mask sunburn. Aside from the obvious skin cancer and aging concerns, you look ridic. Oh, and although I'm a life-long Colorado girl, I hate winter sports. I hate being cold and I hate being cold and soggy. Oh, and I'm afraid of heights. I live less than 2 hours from some of the best ski resorts in the world but I'd much rather spend my winter mountain fun times drinking hot chocolate and people watching in the lodge.

So there you have it! My spring break must-haves for snow, surf, and the city! Enjoy your spring break and don't do anything Joe Francis would tell you to do!

Bang bang bangity bang!

Ok so this post is gonna be a quickie. I have hella long hair and I need a haircut like yesterday. I've had side-swept bangs for a while (they've since grown into weird short sections of hair I'm always messing with) and I'm thinking it may be time to go back to full-on bangs. I had them when I was a blonde but now I'm thinking it's time to try them as a brunette. Zooey Deschanel makes it look so fun, cute, and easy breezy! And if you've read any other posts of mine, you'll know that ZD is one of my fashion icons (along with Emma Stone, obvi). So, thoughts?
Thanks Button Bears!

Treat yo self!

Hey Button Bears! Sorry I've been slightly MIA. I just realized that I've been working on this post for 3 days. In reality, I couldn't decide what to treat myself to. Anyhoozelbeez, I hope you guys like what I came up with in my Polyvore collage!

I've always been the type of person who responds exceedingly well to rewards. So, for various reasons, I feel  like I deserve a reward of some type. I'll explain more about what's up later but for now, let's get down to shiny. I'm thinking a killer pair of shoes but after browsing Barney's, I've decided that I would get two rewards instead of just one! So, my kindergarten logic aside, here's a collage of the superfunstuffs I've had my eyeballs on for the past few weeks/months/years:
Treat yo self!

Since you're all completely fabulous, I think you deserve to treat yo self, too! Tweet or post your new sparkle. It'll be like a virtual show and tell! Now go out and TREAT YO SELF!
