Obligatory SAG awards red carpet review!

I love awards season. In all honesty, the red carpet is almost always better than the awards themselves. So let's get down to business!

I didn't know where to put AngieJo. I like her Jenny Packham dress but she looks like she wants to suck my blood before she passes out from malnutrition. I guess I'm undecided with Angelina.
Eek. Guuurl eat a Kalteen

Ok, onto the lists!

Wear what suits you

Since my last post on interview attire was quite popular (yay!) here's a follow-up post on women's suiting. In my nearly 10 years of working at a certain retail store and 8 years of working in various office settings as an intern and full-time employee, I learned the importance of a high-quality, well-tailored suit -- both on a man and on a woman. For some reason, women seem to have more trouble finding a suit that's flattering and appropriate. So this post is for you, ladies. Here are my rules for finding your first suit that will not only get you the job, but will quite possibly get you a promotion too:

Fake it till you make it: dress to get the job

Dear Shop Therapist,
I've finally started getting calls back after sending out THOUSANDS of resumes. While I'm totally jazzed that I may finally get off the unemployment train, I don't know what to wear. I applied for jobs pretty much everywhere and I'm at a total loss when I look into my closet. So far, I have scheduled interviews with a law firm, a financial consulting firm, and an ad agency. Can you help me out?

Haute dog couture

Today is my bestest doggie friend's 5th birthday! I can't believe how much time flies -- and how fast a little 9lb blonde fluff ball can grow into a 90lb mystery mix full of sass and silly. We think he's a mix of lab and akita (making him a labrakita -- such a cute name!) but since he was found as a stray at about 6 weeks old, we aren't sure what he is. Oh, and since he was adopted, we kind of made an educated guess about his actual b-day.
Baby Elwood, March 2007
So in honor of my baby Elwood Blues who can't really fit into dog clothes (I think he's super happy about that), here are some of my favorite designer dog duds!

I don't remember where this picture is from! Sorry!

And here's a pic of My Ellie Bellie on Halloween! Don't tell him, but this was the only costume we could find that fit ;) He may be a chunk of change, but to me, he's absolutely perfect! Oh, and this post wouldn't be complete without a HUGE thank you to CAWS Animal Shelter in Delta, Colorado for rescuing and fostering my little guy!

Happy birthday to my Puppy!

2012 trends: When to save and when to splurge

Dear Shop Therapist,
Every year I read about fashion trends but I never know which ones to invest in (like spend Marc Jacobs money on) versus just going to Forever 21 or H&M. What are the big trends for 2012 that are worth my hard earned paycheck?
xoxo!

Every year there are so many trends and even more questions about what to wear and how much to spend. Here's a breakdown of a few of my favorite trends and my shopping advice!
Tangerine statement piece
Tangerine dreams!
Verdict? Splurge and save! Spend a bit on something big like a bag, ballet flats, or outerwear then save a little on a tangerine sweater, tee, or (moderately priced) pair of colored jeans. Not ready for full-on tangerine? Stick with accessories and nail polish in this season's "it" color.
A Little White Dress

We all know that we should have a little black dress in our closet. But this spring and summer, add a little white dress to your fashion arsenal.

Verdict? This one depends on your budget. If you're a fashionista with a bulging bank account, then go for a big ticket dress. Otherwise, buy accordingly. Oh, and not to get too icky, but if you tend to be on the sweaty side, spending a lot on a dress that will likely get yellow under the arms may not be the best idea.
Peplum
I'm loving this trend. I'm loving it so much that I don't really see it as a trend. I think this is a look that can carry from season to season by swapping out your blouse and accessories.

Verdict? Definitely splurge. I'm not finding many inexpensive options out there that are well made and are really worth buying. This dress from Modcloth is my favorite peplum piece. It can be dressed down for work, or up for a night out. Perfection!
Pastels
Pastels in 2012

Verdict? See my tangerine advice above. Don't go overboard by blowing a paycheck on a piece that's super trendy like a blush-colored blazer. Instead, go big on pastel accessories and summer weight sweaters. Pastel is such a hard palate to wear. Wearing too much or wearing anything too juvenile or you could end up looking like an Easter egg or toddler in disguise.
Wedges
Certain fashionistas are saying that platforms are out and that traditional stilettos, kitten heels, and wedges are the way to go this season. I say nuts to that -- I love my platforms. That being said, wedges are the shoe of the moment.
A rainbow of wedges!

Verdict? I love shoes. Done right, they're works of art worth every last paycheck penny. So I've never been one to go for cheap shoes. A cheap, plastic shoe is more likely to cause blisters, break (we've all been victims of broken straps), and cause to back pain. So when it comes to wedges (and any other type of shoe) don't be afraid to spend a little more. I'm not saying everyone should go out and buy a pair of Charlotte Olympias; you can buy a great pair of shoes for under $100. Be a bargain hunter, know the style and color you want, don't settle for a pair just because they're on sale, and absolutely positively DO NOT buy anything plastic. Always opt for leather or satin. Your feed, hips, back, and shoulders will thank you.

LOUD trousers/jeans
This trend is tricky. Wearing an entire landscape photograph on your pants definitely isn't for every body type. Chicken legs and no butt are pretty much required. However, those of us who actually have hips and thighs can still partake in this trend by wearing a small print or a solid bright color.

Verdict? Ok, think of how many times you can actually wear printed jeans. I say go for a more inexpensive option -- just make sure the print is perfection and lined up at the seams. As for colored jeans? Don't spend too much because chances are, you won't be wearing them after this summer.

Ok, I hope you don't mind my Polyvore collage overload! Just remember this basic and universal rule: Buy what fits and buy only what you need. Unless we're talking about shoes ;)

The Golden Globes: The good, the bad, and the beige

So my first attempt at live blogging was a bit rocky but I hope to do it again for the next big red carpet event! Shoot me a message if you would like to participate as a "producer."

Anyhoozelbeez, onto the important stuff! Most of my individual predictions were completely off but there were quite a few gowns that I chose for one lady and showed up on another. As for my overall predictions (tangerine, no red, and lots of pastels) were pretty much totally wrong. For more on who wore what and why, keep reading!

Tarts and Tiaras: The 2012 Miss America Pageant

Sadly, Miss America doesn't have a talent portion in the show. I guess we'll have to wait for Miss USA to hear this girl's 18 year old sister sing "Cutie Patootie."
But, what Miss America lacks in talent, it makes up for in sequins, fake hair, and well, quite a few other fake things. Since this isn't an award show and these girls dresses are across the board t-acky, trying to decide who the best dressed is would be like challenging a one legged man to an ass kicking contest. It's just not going to end well. Instead, here's a play-by-play (a mini live blog of sorts) to warm up for tomorrow's big show! My ramblings are after the jump!

Julianna Margulies: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

Julianna Margulies is always a fun one to watch on the red carpet. She always comes thisclose to getting it right then she throws on an Ikea lampshade or looks like she did summersaults right after getting her hair done. I'm predicting Julianna will wear something that's gorgeous in theory, but a disaster in real life. It's such a shame because she's talented, beautiful, and is likely to win a Globe. But I guess there has to be someone for Joan Rivers to rip into on Fashion Police!

Tomorrow is the big show! Be sure to come back tomorrow for the Live Blog event of the century!!!!!! Ok, so I may be overselling it but it will for sure be a good time. The live blog will start at 4PM MST (6PM EST).
Oh, and don't forget about my favorite fashion night of train wrecks -- Miss America is tonight (oh yeah, and football. GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!)!!

2012 Critic's Choice Awards Best and Worst Dressed

After Wednesday night's People's Choice Awards debacle (seriously, how could anyone sit through that mess?), I didn't have it in me to watch the Critics' Choice Awards. Plus, I have a lot of work ahead of me with Sunday's Golden Globes red carpet live blog and wrap-up. So, instead of giving a full list of Thursday night's fashion hits and misses, I'm just going to give you my winner and my "please just go home and try again when you get a new stylist" of the evening.

Off to the races:
Winner of the "My Stylist Deserves an Award, Too!" Award...

Elizabeth Olsen!!!!!
(Honorable Mention: Shailene Woodley in Calvin Klein)
YAY! She doesn't dress like a really rich troll who lives under the Brooklyn Bridge! Don't get me wrong, I love Mary Kate and Ashley but omg get a tailor and dress like you're at least millionaires. I mean, come on. Ok, back to Elizabeth. I'm a sucker for anything Pucci and anything beaded. Elizabeth wore this dress like it was her job. H-to-T the look is perfection. It's tailored perfectly and everything is age-appropriate. Perfection.
Winner of the "please just go home and try again when you get a new stylist" award is...

Michelle Williams
(Honorable Mention: Jessica Chastain in Pepto Bismol)

I got a case of the major madsads when I saw this. Ms. Monroe would NOT approve. Granted, there were only a handful of A-Listers on the red carpet (and no, I'm not including you in the A-List count, Stacey Keibler). The stark color and texture contrast with the black and white just doesn't work. I have my fingers crossed for a major hit on Sunday. I really like her and hate seeing her look anything less than fabulous.

Peace out, Girl Scouts! Oh, and I just saw that the Miss USA or Miss America pageant is on tomorrow (I hope it's the one with the talent portion). Expect a post on my most favorite fashion disaster event of the season! And just think, in a few short years, this slice of awesome may be competing for the sash, roses, and tiara her mother wants so badly:

Rooney Mara: Red carpet retrospective

All the young Hollywood fashion buzz has been centered squarely on Rooney Mara. New to the red carpet scene, Rooney has definitely had more hits than misses (although her bangs still majorly bother me). So far, she's rocked Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, and Valentino just to name a few. While her look is severe compared to other young starlets, Rooney Mara is staying true to her edgy roles and her tough girl personality. My favorite? Mara's white Givenchy gown (more of a work of art, really) she wore to the premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in the UK. Absolute perfection!

Get the look: Emma Stone in green Gucci at the PCAs

I love Emma Stone. I want to be her bff.

She showed up to the (super craptastic) 2012 People's Choice Awards looking absolutely effortlessly stunning in Gucci Summer 2012 Ready to Wear. The jacket alone would set you back $2,950 (not to mention its nearly sold out worldwide) so here's a breakdown of how to get the look without having to sell your car and your baby sister:

The real deal:
Gucci Gilet Jacket, $2,950
Gucci Side Band Pant, $1,050
Gucci V-Neck Tie Top, $750
Gucci Ophelie High Heel T-Strap Open Toe Pump, $1,350
The omigod grand total (not including Tiffany &Co. accessories and lucite trophies): $6,100

Fear not! Your Shop Therapist has more affordable (and just as fabulous) solutions!
Get the Look: Emma Stone at the 2012 People's Choice Awards

My advice? Unless you're dead set on the green tuxedo blazer, go with white. Finding the right green tux is next to impossible (I've been searching for the past hour and little luck), but you risk looking like a leprechaun or like you just won the Master's. Green blazers are, however, rather accessible -- and there are some in every shade and price range.

Send me a message with your Stone-inspired looks! Have fun with this trend and work it!

Michelle Williams: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

Michelle Williams is nominated for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe. I'm hoping she channels Marilyn this year because last year's daisy debacle was a huge disappointment.  Her red carpet choices this past year have been mostly hits so I have high hopes for Michelle. She strikes me as someone who only uses a stylist when she absolutely has to. In other words, I picture her being low-maintenance with a "go with the flow" attitude. That said, I'm expecting a flowing gown in a pastel or a neutral beige.
Michelle Williams: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

Sofia Vergara: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

It's Sofia Vergara so I'm expecting nothing less than Va, Va, and tons of VOOM. I'm guessing we'll see her in tangerine or neon, but there's a chance she'll do a big print. With all of the Modern Family red carpet appearances, Sofia has yet to totally bomb so whoever is styling her deserves something major and sparkly. Although, to be fair Sofia could wear burlap and be a knockout.

People's Choice Awards: Does no one have a stylist anymore?

So the People's Choice Awards is probably the most boring and cheesy prime time awards show. No one really dresses up, the scripted banter is worse than Whitney, and Rachel Ray was actually nominated for something.

That being said, I feel like I should at least give you my best and worded dressed. It will be like a practice run for my Golden Globes wrap up (only a lot less A-listey and a lot more "that A-List celeb couldn't be here tonight so I'm accepting this glass thing on her behalf"). I officially made it through 17 minutes of the People's Choice Awards so that must be some kind of a record.

Ok, on with the show! There was no pre-show red carpet, so I'm basing this best/worst on photos from Just Jared. Oh, and I'm only going to name the "best" designers because I'm in a good mood and don't want to offend anyone more than I already am.

The best!
Lea Michele in Marchesa
It pains me to say this since she gives me a major bratterpie vibe, but I really love what Lea Michele is wearing. She wears Marchesa to nearly every red carpet event and it's usually a fish tail/mermaid style dress but I'm loving this departure. Her Jimmy Choos are giving me a mean case of the whycantIhavethose, too. Ok, that's enough with the nice.

Kristen Bell in Valentino
Kristen, you look awkward standing on the poorly lit red carpet alone. We feel your pain. You must have thought for a second that you got the date wrong. No, you didn't. You're just one of 6 celebs who showed up. Either way, you look fabulous. I hope you had plans for the rest of the evening because your ensemble is too good to be wasted on this show.

Kaley Cuoco in Badgley Mischka
On trend, age appropriate, and off the runway. This is how the red carpet is done. Hats off to you, Miss. Cuoco. While I'm not loving your hair, your accessories and makeup overshadow your Bumpit. This is definitely one of those dresses that I'm guessing looks even better in person. Oh, and based on the 17 minutes I saw of the show, she did a surprisingly great job.

Emma Stone in Gucci
Ok, so I love Emma Stone -- who doesn't? At first I loved her tuxedo look. Then I hated it. Now I love it. It's a bit editorial but the look can be made wearable so easily. Her red hair looks amazeballs with the green jacket and she looks effortless. Because, let's face it. This is the Sadie Hawkin's dance of Hollywood awards shows.
The worst!
Vanessa Hudgens

Right now I'm watching I'm Pregnant and a Stripper. Even this pregnant chick would tell Vanessa Hudgens to slow ya roll. We get it. You don't want to be seen as a Disney teen princess anymore. Now go home and fire your stylist.

Oh and don't get me started on Demi Lovato. She looked like a broke down beauty queen extra from an episode of Designing Women

Jennifer Lawrence
You know how you always find zodiac trinkets on the clearance rack? Well, this dress reminds me of one of those zodiac symbols (don't ask me which one because I think it's a bunch of bunk). So clearance rack + zodiac symbols. You get where I'm going with this. At least the swirls cover her nerps and her picachu -- And she gets points for channeling Coco

Nina Dobrev in Elie Saab
There's not much to say about this train wreck. Barnacles have attached to her arms and her tailor seemingly went missing. Oh, and her bad bridesmaid shoes (which probably cost more than a month's rent for me) are giving me a migraine. I just can't with this one.

Ashley Greene
Ok, Ashley Greene I don't know who you are or what you're doing at the PCA's (I even got tired of typing out the whole name of this stupid show). But girl, this dress is all kinds of NO on you. It's too tight and there's too much leather. Kristen Bell did the leather and lace look without looking like the black widow, btw, so it really can be done. Give it back to Lita Ford and try again at the next B-list event you're invited to. And PS -- CBS couldn't pony up for a real red carpet with more than 2 florescent lights and a desk lamp?

And the Shop Therapist's Golden Prescription for a New Stylist Award goes to...

Ginnifer Goodwin!
GG photo courtesy JustJared.com
Even Ginnifer knows this dress is as ridiculous as her first name. While I applaud her for trying to rock the neon trend, this dress is both too much and not enough at the same time. It's too long and the sleeves are too exaggerated. This dress reminds me of the old Circus Circus and while I loved their breakfast buffet and arcade, seeing it in a red carpet gown is akin to seeing said buffet breakfast in reverse.

So there you have it! Way more misses than hits because clearly everyone in Hollywood cared less about this show that I did.

Sweet dreams, my little Buttons (and try not to think about the Circus Circus clown)!

Zooey Deschanel: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

Her pink Monique Lhuillier Emmy gown was universally panned. I'm hoping Zooey redeems herself in something quirky, cute, and on-trend. I'm thinking she'll either partake in the pastel trend or in a bold print. I love her either way but I'm hoping that Zooey looks especially fabulous!

Charlize Theron: 2012 Golden Globes prediction

So the mullet dress is back on trend. It still reminds me of the GNR November Rain video but I'm thinking someone will rock it. And that someone is Charlize. She will be perfection as long as she steers clear of the self tanner. Her gorgeous Gucci gown she wore to the 2004 Oscars was overshadowed by her unfortunate orang-ey hue.

Being that she adores Dior, I would be surprised if Charlize shows up in anything other than Christian Dior. The only problem is the Dior 2011 Couture show is also the infamous Katy Perry meets the Jetson's collection. Dior's spring 2012 RTW collection is a better bet.

Rooney Mara: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

Although Rooney Mara is new to the A-list red carpet, she's already garnered a bit of a reputation for being a spoiled brat with wayyyyy too severe hair and makeup. She could turn it around on Sunday by looking a little less Dragon Tattoo and a little more It Girl but don't count on it. From Rooney, I'm expecting something black, sheer, and majorly edgy. Honestly, I think she's more than ready for a major McQueen moment but I think she could buck all trends and go with a young, unknown designer.

Baller status: Jennifer Fisher's gold band-aid ring

I'm so fly I patch my wounds with gold band-aids:
Nails: Glitzerland by OPI
Ok, so I'm totally exaggerating. I got this Jennifer Fisher ring just after Christmas and I have yet to take it off. I absolutely positively LOVE it. My shiny new pretty arrived in a gorgeous gift box complete with a container of jewelry cleaner. I can't find this exact ring on her website, but Barneys and a few other retailers sell her sparkly fun stuff.

For me, the ring represents healing, improvement, and growth -- the perfect symbol to help me kick off a new year working on ridding myself of anxiety and panic attacks. I plan to have the band-aid engraved with the name of my favorite Queen song: "I Want to Break Free."

I've always been one to love fun, funky, and quirky jewelry. New York-based designer Jennifer Fisher is so amazingly talented -- her pieces are off the wall, but are delicate enough for everyday wear. Thankfully, she works in brass, too, so her little works of art work for any budget. Now that I have one of her gorgeous pieces, I want to buy every single piece of jewelry on her site. Needless to say, I'm obsessed. At the top of my wish list? The gold vertebrae cuff ;)
Happy shopping!

Angelina Jolie: Golden Globes 2012 prediction

So last year Angie Jo surprised pretty much everyone by wearing color -- with sparkles no less! Her emerald Atelier Versace encrusted with Swarovski crystals was a nice departure from her usual draped black or beige. Lately she's been wearing her trademark black (although she wore an ah-mazing red-orange Jenny Packham gown to the Tree of Life premiere), so I predict she'll either stick to something black and draped or she'll surprise everyone in tangerine. Oh, and vintage Versace is a decent bet. Donatella hasn't shown many black gowns lately and I don't see Angelina in pastel ombre green.
