WERK! New York Fashion Week SS 2015

With New York Fashion Week filling up my Instagram and Twitter feed, I feel like it's an appropriate time to neglect my studies and talk about Spring 2015 fashion. It's the first cold day of the season here in Denver, so thinking about spring is helping me forget the schmutz that's falling from the sky at the moment.

Four trends really stood out this year (so far -- it seems like fashion week is a little like the Grammy's. A lot of preparation and excitement, it's all pretty much enjoyable, but after the third Iggy Azalea performance you're getting ready to get back to regularly scheduled programming).

Psychedelic prints (Anna Sui, Thom Browne)
Proceed with absolute caution. You could go from loud and proud to "Laugh-In" if you aren't careful. Be smart about this trend and stick to one psychedelic print.

Gingham (DVF, Altuzarra)
Classic and classy. Gingham was likely in your mom's closet and your grandma's closet. With some simple tailoring, you could turn some great vintage gingham finds into a spring go-to outfit. Just be sure to update the look with age appropriate and on-trend tailoring. Vintage power suits and prairie skirts may be beyond help, so maybe stick to gingham (and wallet friendly) stores like J. Crew and the Gap.

Shoulder Cutouts (Prabal, Victoria Beckham)
If any trend is going to be done to death this year, I have a strong feeling it's going to be shoulder cutouts. It'll be 2014's peplum. If you want to bare your shoulders, get in on the trend before it's anywhere and everywhere. Before you know it, the look will be popping up in junior highs across the heartland.

But most importantly, a few major runways like Betsey Johnson and Telfar featured REAL WOMEN! Yes, I know that in the world of high fashion it's somewhat important to have a woman with a body like a wooden hanger, but seriously. Hangers don't wear clothes. People do. (Granted, the women walking in the shows mentioned above are still thinner than the average woman, but they have hips! And boobs!). Granted, finding shows that featured real, normal women was a task, but I really hope this catches on. Hardly any women are built like super tall 12 year old boys.

And what better way for fashionistas and fashion buyers to see what new designs will look like than to see them on bodies that fit their target audience? I don't think the stereotypical runway model is going to fall by the wayside, but this is a wonderful thing to see.

Alright, off of my soapbox and onto my next class. For the record, law school is a bitch but Style.com is proving to be a life saver!

2014 Oscar (gown) Predictions!

Holy moly I know I've said this every time I've posted in the last two years but eesh! I have really neglected this poor little blog. If you're visiting for the first time or if you're my fan (I'm pretty sure that after only posting a handful of times since 2012, I don't have many dedicated fans and that's 100% my fault!).
Anyhoozelbeez, let's get down to bidness:
Oscar Predictions
No, I’m not going to predict who will win the little gold guy. I can’t even pretend to know what’s going on in the collective heads of Oscar voters. Instead, here are my fashion predictions for Hollywood’s biggest night!

Jennifer Lawrence
Of course she’ll be in Dior. Her new multi-million dollar multi-year contract with the legendary fashion house pretty much seals that deal. I'm not blown away by any of the gowns in Dior's Spring 2014 Couture show -- or any other recent show, really (Spring 2012 was fabulous). By the looks of their last couture collection and because Dior isn't showing in Paris until the Friday before Oscar Sunday, I'm guessing the golden child will be sporting custom Dior. With Rachel Zoe as her stylist, homegirl is going to make sure JLaw is one-of-a-kind perfection. But for kicks, here are some that may work or be re-worked for JLaw:

Julia Roberts:
Homegirl is a wildcard. I wouldn’t be surprised if she wore a fancy lady tux since it’s highly doubtful she’ll win. Plus she had her big gown moment in Valentino when she won her Oscar for Erin Brocavich.

Sandy Bullock:
She had a major Marchesa moment when she won her gold guy for The Blind Side. I’m torn as to whether or not she’ll stick with Georgina Chapman or go with another designer. I’m thinking that if it’s anyone, it’ll be Elie Saab.

Cate Blanchette:
Givenchy isn't showing in Paris until Oscar Day so I'm not too sure how things will work, plus Givenchy hasn't shown a couture collection since 2012 so the chances of Cate wearing Givenchy are pretty slim. RTW is a possible option, but I want to see some haute couture! This makes me sad, angry, and hurt. Here are some predictions for Cate:

Amy Adams:
If I can be 100% honest, I don’t like AA. She bugs me. You know how some people feel about Anne Hathaway? That’s how I feel about Amy Adams. I don’t care what she wears because I probably won’t remember it. I actually wouldn't be surprised if she shows up in something gross from the latest Versayce collection.

Lupita Nyong’o:
I’m predicting Lupita will be best dressed of the century. Her red Ralph Lauren at the Globes was BEYOND. Since she’s the new girl on the red carpet, I have a feeling she’ll be auditioning dozens of designers. Predicting who and what she’ll wear is an exercise in futility. But, since I’m sitting in the law library with loads of Con Law reading to do, I’m more than happy to pull some predictions! I'm really hoping that she's Tom Ford's girl because really who does over-the-top-fabulous-perfection better than Tom Ford?!

And the wild card dresses!

For the afterparties:
Maybe Anne Hathaway? I'd say Kate Hudson but she's been rocking Gucci like it's her job (and it basically is her job -- but she looks great in Gucci so no complaints here).

No joke this post took me over a week and a half to write because there were so many killer gowns (and so many annoying Blogger quirks). Happy Oscar Sunday, Buttons!

Why are you wearing pajamas to class?

As a long-time student (basically, I'm in 18th grade), I can say with absolute certainty that pajamas are only appropriate at home. A microscopic amount of exceptions exist and the only one I can think of right now is going to the doctor if you're so sick you can't put on real pants. Aside from that, take off your fleece pajamas and put on -- at the VERY least -- some yoga pants.

That brings me to what I've seen on campus. In the law school, I don't think I've seen pajamas (yet), but sharing a campus with undergrads, sloppy pajama pants and floppy tees are abundant. I get it: You're tired, you haven't showered today, and will likely just go back to bed after your 9am class. No excuse. I'm not saying you need to be like the hair-and-makeup-and-heels girls; just put on some real pants. No drawstrings, no flannel, nothing you slept in the night before (walk of shame attire excluded if you're walking home. Walking to class in last night's outfit? Oh boy.).

Here are some comfy alternatives that will turn heads in the quad for the right reason. Oh, and one last thought...

Leggings are not pants.

Glitter bomb from BA Star {{sponsored post}}

Oh heeeeey there!
I know that as one of my 7 followers (ok, 6 because one is me) you're having serious withdrawals since I haven't posted here in a few weeks. I promise I've been busy -- Big things and such are in the works. Dreams are coming true here people but more on that a lot later, k?

So this is a sponsored post thanks to BA Star makeup. I have to admit that getting free fabulous things in the mail is one of the best things ever -- On top of that, my package from BA Star contained glitter. I know. Glitter in any form is already a winner with me.

Anyhoo, BA Star sent me a 5-color palette of eyeshadows. The Natural Shadow Palette contains 3 mineral shadows -- Bronze, Cocoa, and Nude and 2 gel glitters -- Gold and Crystal. It also came with a pretty decent brush/applicator combo. I have what my cousin calls "mood eyes." Basically, my eyes are blue but reflect off of what I'm wearing. Blue shirt = blue eyes, green shirt = green eyes, grey shirt = grey eyes. Don't get too excited, though, because the rainbow eyeball fun ends there.

Onto the important stuff. When it comes to eyeshadow, I don't use a primer. I have oily skin but my shadow always seems to stay put. Full disclosure -- I think this is because I don't go super cheap with my shadows. I mostly stick to Sephora, Kat von D, and MAC.

I work in a pretty crazy anything goes office to glitter fabulous is encouraged. For my daytime look I went pretty basic, nothing mind-blowing or terribly different than the "evening" look.

For my evening look I went a little heavier on the color and added the gel glitter shadow to my lower lashes. Fun in theory but in reality it was a little like viewing life through a glitter curtain:

Overall, I liked the colors (minus the iridescent glitter shadow -- a little too cheerleader for me) but the applicator brush was on the cheap side. Granted, 90% of brushes that come with eye shadow kits are on the cruddy side but I couldn't even use the "brush" side of the brush. The non-gel shadows were good but were crumbly. I have a feeling the individual palettes will eventually crack. The gold glitter was fun and I liked that I didn't have to use a separate gel primer like I would have to with MAC.

Also, the shadows contain parabens -- A no-no in my book that's basically a chemical preservative. I'm not a chemist but the stuff I've heard about parabens is no bueno. Also, I can't find anywhere on BA Star's website about animal testing. That's another red flag for me. I hate to be such a Debbie Downer about this stuff, but when it comes down to it, I stay away from parabens and I am against animal testing on cosmetics.

Legally Brunette

Hey there, butterbeans!
Long time no post and I'm really sorry! I know, I know. I can stuff my sorries in a sack. But I have a good excuse for abandoning you: I'm officially a law student! What that means is 1) my fashion-sense has hit the skids, 2) I wore heels for the first time in 3 weeks yesterday, 3) I'm exhausted (not just now, like, always exhausted), 4) I always have something to read and it's not always terribly interesting (subject matter jurisdiction, anyone?), and 5) This is where I've always wanted to be and I can't believe it's really happening.

Anyhoozelbeez, I'll try my hardest to get something fashion-related posted A$AP. Until then, it's Civ Pro wishes and tortious dreams!
